Dr. Barbara L. Nichols, a legendary and trailblazing Madison-based nursing leader, passed away on July 22, 2026, at the age of 87.
She made profound history throughout her life and career, including:
Breaking racial barriers as the first Black president of the Wisconsin Nurses Association (1970).
Becoming the first Black president of the American Nurses Association (ANA) (1979).
Serving as secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Regulation and Licensing, making her the first African American woman to hold a cabinet-level position in Wisconsin.
Leading as the longtime Executive Director of the Wisconsin Center for Nursing until her retirement in 2025.
Memorial arrangements and official local obituary notices from her family or local Madison funeral homes are being coordinated through nursing associations and community tributes honoring her legacy.
